Sneak Peek
Filed in Research and development, The Medlin Horn on May.15, 2009
Okay, I’ve been talking about this Bb ascending horn for a while and now I should probably prove that it does indeed exist. Here it is in its current condition,
This has had to be a side project because I am readying a new double horn to sell at the IHS workshop. It still needs its descending tuning slide and an F extension. As you can see, the sideways tuning slide allows for the full length mouthpipe and the descending tuning slide will go from the mouthpipe to the topmost outer slide. I hope to have it done in the next few weeks!

VERY interesting instrument! This might make a superb jazz horn (especially with the F extension). I’ll have to keep an eye on this project.

Its tuned using the 4th valve slide as the overall tuning slide. The slide just after the leadpipe tunes the C horn only. Backwards, but easy to adjust to!
It is indeed finished, its now in full production!

How can I trial this horn now?

The ascending Bb seems to be a very interesting project and an instrument that I could have used several times during my career. Would it be possible to combine the Bb ascending horn with your full double horn or would there be too many leadpipe compromises? It would probably result in a ‘poor person’s triple’ or even better yet an almost triple without the severe compromises in weight and tone color that usually occurs with current models from various manufacturers.
